How do I wash my dress?
The best day of your life is coming or has already passed? Did your dress get stained before your wedding? Do you just want to wash it to put it away or return it to the rental shop? Here are some tips for washing your dress yourself at home without damaging it.
Many brides wonder if their dress can be put in the washing machine. If you ask yourself this question, you just have to think about reading the label of your dress. However, be aware that there are certain risks when washing a wedding dress in the washing machine. Indeed, delicate fabrics can be damaged by very hot water and a bad wash cycle. Choose a good detergent and a cycle suitable for delicate laundry, without spinning.
However, some dresses made from delicate fabrics cannot be machine washed. In this case, prefer hand washing. Use a delicate detergent specially designed for hand washing. Soak your dress in a tub of cold water for an hour or overnight if you find it helpful.
If your dress is stained, wipe each stain with suitable liquid soap and let it sit for an hour. Then, gently scrub the stains with a soft brush. Rinse your dress and lay it out, preferably outdoors, in the shade.
To properly wash your dress, always be careful to treat the stains inside out so as not to damage the beads, sequins and embroidery. Remember to test each product you are going to use on a small area of the fabric first. Once the product is applied, leave to act for a few minutes then gently treat the stain with a brush.
Generally, bridal shops give care and cleaning tips based on the fabrics of your dress. Do not hesitate to follow them.
And above all, never put your dress in the washing machine on a slow cycle.
Do not use hot water, abrasives or tumble dry on a very hot cycle.
Be aware that it is best to opt for a professional dry cleaning for dresses made of really delicate fabrics or natural fibers.
Synthetic fabrics like polyester can be hand washed.
If beads or sequins fall off after washing your dress, don't panic! You can easily replace them with new ones.
Keep in mind that it is best to avoid using a clothes dryer or iron to dry your dress. After washing, let it drip off in the shower. Then lay out the dress on towels, in the open air and in the shade.
In an emergency, you can use the tumble dryer on low heat by first putting your dress in a laundry bag.
