How do I iron my dress?

How do I iron my dress?

Has your wedding dress already joined your dressing room? Soon D-Day and you fear that it will be crumpled? A wedding dress is made of delicate fabrics like satin, tulle, taffeta, silk, lace and chiffon. These are not suitable for regular ironing and instead require special techniques.

Most brides-to-be choose to entrust the ironing to a professional at the dry cleaners. Would you dare to do the same? Would you rather take care of it yourself? Here are some valuable tips for ironing the dress of your dreams.

But before you start, get yourself a sheet, a skirt hanger, two hangers, an ironing board, an iron, tissue paper and a towel.

Place your towel on the ironing board.

Heat your iron to medium temperature, without steam because the water can damage your dress.

Start at the top. Iron on the right side if it is devoid of decorations, otherwise, do it upside down.

When you're done, take a warm cloth and place it in your hand, then tuck it into the sleeves. Arrange the fabric so there are no wrinkles and stuff with tissue paper to keep it smooth.

If your dress has laces, use the hot cloth as well. When you're done, wrap them with more paper to prevent them from creasing.

Hang your dress so that it is a few inches off the floor. Start at the seams working from front to back. Press the waist and hem well. Once you are done with the dress, take the skirt hanger and attach it to the bottom of the dress and hang it somewhere safe.

Don't hesitate to ask your seamstress or salesperson about the techniques suitable for ironing your dress. Ask if you can use a clothes steamer to get rid of any wrinkles and get your dress spotless before you put it on on the big day.

To avoid creases, remember to put plastic on your dress before slipping it into the cover. This will avoid friction against the veil and the cover.

Place your dress on a padded hanger and hang it in your bathroom. Lay some towels on the floor and block the bottom door opening with another towel. This will keep the heat and humidity in the room, which will relax the pleats in your dress.

Opt for ironing the dress inside out. Thus, in case of damage it will not be visible, since it is the inside of your dress.

Taking care of your wedding dress is very important. Being generally made of delicate fabrics, it can easily be damaged or wrinkled. Do not hesitate to follow these precious tips for an impeccable dress on D-Day. However, if you don't feel like ironing your dress yourself, entrust it to a professional who specializes in dry cleaning wedding dresses.
